Recently, I had the chance to check out some of the new offerings in the Terminal C United Club at Newark Liberty International Airport. As I have written about previously, I have been quite pleased with some of the upgrades to United’s airport lounges over the past few years, especially considering the state they were in during the latter stages of 2013 and throughout 2014. Even the simple additions of hot oatmeal during breakfast hours and hot soups throughout the day have been welcome improvements. Yes, the overall quality of airport lounges in the United States still lags far behind the quality of some international airport lounges.
We are, however, seeing things move in the right direction.
On this particular visit, I noticed that the United now offers patrons flavored ice water (mint and lemon) in addition to plain water. There were also different types of juice available from a self-serve tray located adjacent to the food displays. Full bar service is also available, although employees cannot serve alcohol at the club until 9:00 a.m. local time (at least in New Jersey). At 6:00 a.m. on a Wednesday, the United Club I visited (located near the 70-gates in Terminal C) was relatively empty, although the lounge became more crowded as it became later in the morning.
I did not eat too much in the club as my flight to Los Angeles was in BusinessFirst on a Premium Service flight and I knew I would receive a multi-course breakfast onboard the aircraft. However, the expanded beverages options were a nice thing to see, even if they were just small changes in a large airport lounge world.
Keep on flying, and keep on trying. One change at a time!
